Prof. dr bab. Jan Jaworski
Room: 267     Phone extn.: 210     email: jaworski@chem.uw.edu.pl

Teaching Division:

Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry

Educational and
professional goals:

Capability to use the knowledge of electron configurations of atoms in order to predict properties of elements of main groups and of simple chemical compounds. Capability to illustrate thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of chemical reactions using respective plots. Capability to calculate heats of reactions, entropy and free energy changes in chemical reactions, equilibrium constants and the temperature dependence of equilibrium and rate constants.

Course description:

Seminar subjects are related to the content of lectures of General Chemistry given by prof. J. Jaworski and they include:

- stoichiometry of chemical reactions; gases, liquids and phase equilibria
- ionic equilibria in aqueous solutions, equilibrium constant
- subatomic and elemental particles, de Broglie’s waves of matter
- Heisenberg principle, fundamentals of quantum mechanics,
electron configurations of atoms and ions
- molecular orbitals, σ and π bonds
- polar covalent bonds, ionic and metallic bonds
- molecular geometry of covalent compounds, VSEPR theory
- first law of thermodynamics: heats of reactions
- second law of thermodynamics: entropy
- Gibbs free energy and spontaneity of reactions
- chemical kinetics: rates of reactions, reaction order and activation energy
- chemical kinetics: reaction mechanism, catalysis
- ionic bonds and ionic crystals.
