Course description:

The aim of the classes is the mathematical illustration of problems presented on the lecture from Physics A. Topics of classes are directly connected with the topics of the lectures. Electrostatic field of systems of electric charges, electric dipole: permanent and induced. Gauss’s law. Dielectrics, polarization. Conductors, capacitors, electric circuits, Kirchoff’s laws. Magnetic field, due to moving charge, due to wire with current. Magnetic moment. Motion of a charge in magnetic field. Magnetic properties of matter; diamagnetism, paramagnetism, ferromagnetism. Electromagnetic induction law, self-induction, alternating currents. Maxwell’s equations, wave equation, electromagnetic waves. Maxwell’s equations in a material medium. Propagation of electromagnetic waves in a material medium; reflection, refraction, diffraction, interference, coherence, state of a wave polarization. Interaction of an electromagnetic wave with molecules; emission, absorption, index of refraction, Raman scattering, spectrum.

Required background:

Knowledge of physics and mathematics at the level taught in the secondary schools and during I semester. Positively passed exams in Physics A (I sem.).

Form of assessment:

Tests and participation in classes.
