Teaching Division:

Physics and Radiochemistry

Educational and
professional goals:

The main goal is to acquire the skill in verification of basic physics laws by measurements and by analysis of experimental results. It is also important to learn how measuring instruments operate and to what they serve.

Course description:

During the semester one makes 10 short experiments including following subjects:

mechanics - harmonic motion (simple pendulum, complex pendulum and torsion pendulum); - principles of energy and momentum conservation (elastic and nonelastic collisions);

rotational dynamics - (rotational inertia of Oberbeck’s pendulum, Steiner’s law);

vibrations and waves - (standing waves in string);

electrostatics - distribution of electric potential; capacitor in DC circuit;

electrodynamics - Ampere’s law, Biote-Savart’s law, Faraday’s law of induction; ferromagnetic and ferroelectric hysteresis, physics od dielectrics;

DC and AC electric currents - Ohm’s law, Kirchhoff’s rules, work and power of current, measurements of EMF, changing the range of measuring device;

geometrical and wave optics - coefficient of refraction of solids and fluids; polarization, diffraction and interference of light - investigation of light coming through single slit, double slits, multiple slits and difraction grating;

physics of solids - semiconductors (diode and transistor);

atomic physics - thermionic emission, external photoelectric effect, emission and absorption spectra.

Required background:

Basic knowledge on physics from first semester lectures on physics A or B and from school on general lyceum level.

Form of assessment:

One should assess 10 exercises. To assess the exercise it is required to pass colloquy on theoretical backgrand and to obtained acceptance of written description of experimental results. Assessment is on grade.

Remarks:

* In semester one makes 10 labs each 3 hours long.
