professional goals:

The students attending the course will get background information in chemical technology, biotechnology, chemical and biochemical engineering, according to description of the course.

Course description:

Basic rules of chemical technology and description of biochemical technologies. Catalysis and biocatalysis in industry. Characterization of industrial microorganisms - their modification, isolation, selection. Biological sources of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen. Sources of energy. Development of technological process. Biocatalyst immobilization and performance. Measurement and control of industrial chemical and biochemical processes. Bioreactors - design features and principles of sterile operation. Upstream and downstream process in biotechnology. Heat and mass transfer in chemical and biochemical industry. Industrial techniques of separation, concentration and purification of bioproducts.
Practical applications: production of ethanol, organic acids, aminoacids, and enzymes. Biotransformations and synthesis of chemicals using enzymes. Antibiotics, antisera, vaccines. Biometallurgy and environmental biotechnology. Renewable sources of energy - biomass, biofuel and biodiesel. Basics of industrial processes economics and design. Patents. Biotech companies. Bioethics.

Required background:

Courses and laboratories in organic chemistry, physical chemistry and biochemistry.
