Educational and
professional goals:

Knowledge and understanding of the properties of the chemical elements and their inorganic compounds, with examples of practical applications

Course description:

Historical and contemporary systems of classifications of the elements. Periodicity of the properties of the elements. Atomic and ionic radii. Electronic energies in atoms. Structures of selected inorganic compounds. Covalent, molecular, metallic and ionic crystals. General characteristics of metals. Oxidation states, redox potentials, redox equilibria. The role of solvation, characteristics of various solvents as the reaction media. Hard and soft acids and bases. Systematic characteristics of the elements, particularly of hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, selenium, tellurium, nitrogen group, halogen group, noble gases, carbon, boron and silicon, in connection with the properties of other elements (including alkali metals and alkaline-earth metals). Selected detailed problems: superconductivity, superfluidity, fuel cells, intercalation. General characteristics of the transition elements. Complex compounds of transition elements. The nature of the metal-ligand bonds. Isomerism of complex compounds. Selected mechanisms of the ligand exchange reactions in complex compounds. Labile and inert complexes.
Mechanisms of the redox reactions of complexes. Colors of complex compounds. Selected properties of the lanthanides.
