Educational and
professional goals:

Learning practical knowledge in geometrical crystallography and, in particular, point and space group symmetry.

Course description:

Lectures are focused on definition of the crystalline state, introduction of the most important crystallographic notions such as stereographic and cyclographic projections, point group symmetry, translational symmetry, crystal systems, space groups, interpretation of space groups in the International Tables for Crystallography, Miller indices, Bravais networks, close and the closest packing of spheres, antysymmetry, reciprocal lattice, symmetry of the reciprocal lattices, etc.

Required background:


Basic knowledge of math and physics.

Form of assessment:


Sum of points from colloquia and written exam.
