Educational and
professional goals:

Broadening of students’ knowledge in physical chemistry before the preparation of M.Sc. dissertation.

Course description:

This course consists of selected experimental and theoretical exercises connected with the scientific program developed in the research laboratories inside the Teaching Division of Physical Chemistry. It includes four main subjects: electrochemistry, molecular spectroscopy, thermodynamic and chemistry of plasma. Students are assigned to perform following investigations: (1,2) transfer of charge in the systems of modified lipid bilayers and molecular monolayers on gold electrode, (3) determination of the rate constant of electropolymerization of conducting polymer (4) spectroelectrochemical investigations of conducting polymers (5) computer calculations of the liquid-vapor phase equilibrium in nonelectrolyte mixtures, (6) computations of theoretical infrared spectra and electron spectra for a given molecule, (7) investigations of isotopic effects in NMR spectra, (8) monitoring of pyridine adsorption on silver electrode by SERS method, (9) determination of gas temperature on the base of emission spectra of diatomic molecules, (10,11) investigation of H2 electrosorption on palladium and characteristics of new electrode materials, (12) measurement of diffusion coefficients by the methods of NMR spectroscopy, (13) modeling of the dependence of vicinal NMR coupling constant on molecular conformation, (14) investigations of spontaneous raise of ceramic nanofibers and (15) investigations of nanostructures in plasma. Students are asked to select 10 exercises from the list of all 15 available items.

Required background:

Knowledge of Physical Chemistry I and II, description prepared for each exercise and obligatory literature assigned by an assistant.

Form of assessment:

Laboratory reports and tests.
