Physics and Radiochemistry

Educational and
professional goals:

Acquiring knowledge about the structure and physicochemical properties of soft matter (liquid crystals, gels, nano-materials, molecular crystals).

Course description:

The course includes:

- prepearing of the samples - liquid crystals, gels, polymers, molecular crystals, nanoblends, luster or micellar materiale - by means of chemical or physicochemical processes;
- phase transition studies by optical and spectroscopic methods;
- synthesis of liquid crystalline materials, phase identification using polarizing optical microscopy
- studies of phase transitions in liquid crystals using calorimetric technics
- structural studies of smectic and columnar liquid crystalline phases using X-ray diffraction methods
- liquid crystals with polar order - measurements of spontaneous electric polarization
- molecular dynamics in soft matter studies by dielectric spectroscopy
- studies of short-range order in soft matter by static (e.g. X-ray diffraction) and dynamic (e.g. femtosecond spectroscopy) methods
- studies of optical, electrooptical and magnetooptical properties (linear and nonlinear) of soft mater at phase transitions.
