Teaching Division:

Chemical Technology

Educational and
professional goals:

Laboratory experiments to illustrate key concepts in chemical technology.

Course description:

During this practical course the students gain knowledge about equipment used in Chemical Technology Lab and they increase their experience in laboratory techniques needed for completion of M. Sc. Thesis in the following areas of chemistry: kinetics of free radical reactions, autoxidation and antioxidants, polymer chemistry, calorimetry of hererogeneous systems, catalysis of nitrobenzene carbonylation reaction. The students conduct laboratory experiments and analyses related to: preparation of organic samples and their spectral characterization; analysis of samples by gas chromatography with FID and mas spectrometer detector, column and HPLC chromatography and infrared (FTIR) measurements; study of radical reaction kinetics; thermal analysis (Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Thermogravimetry, Flow Calorimetry); determination of acidity constants for weak organic acid; basis of theoretical description of polymer solutions.

Required background:

Lectures and laboratories in inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry.

Form of assessment:

Lab reports.
