Educational and
professional goals:

Knowledge of electrochemical power sources, their application, environmental implications, recycling and utilization of used batteries. Understanding of basic principles and new developments of batteries including new materials used in modern power sources.

Course description:

Review of known electrochemical power sources, i.e. batteries and accumulators, and the environmental implications of their use. Historical background of the discovery and development of electrochemical power sources. Classification of batteries: primary batteries, accumulators, fuel cells, biofuel cells. The emphasis of this course will be on the zinc-manganese, lead-acid, hydride-lithium, lithium-ion and high temperature batteries and fuel and biofuel cells. The description of fuel cells will include high and low temperature fuel cells and the cells containing various types of electrolytes. Attention will also be focused on new concepts in the field of electrochemical power sources and their modern application in electric vehicles.
