Determination of water hydrolysis rate constant
of perfluoro(2-methyl-3-pentanone)

Novec 1250 - perfluoro(2-methyl-3-pentanone) - is an environment – friendly compound widely used as a fire suppression agent. One of its hydrolysis products is 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-Heptafluoropropane (HFC 227 ea), a gaseous compound with very high global warming potential (GWP). In order to estimate impact of increasing emission of Novec 1250 on the environment, liquid hydrolysis rate constants (Kaq) were measured in two temperatures (273 K and 293 K) and eight pH values. Substrate and product concentrations were monitored with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR); liquid – phase hydrolysis products were investigated using 19F nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR).
