Transient reflection spectroscopy for phonon dynamics measurements

I present a transient reflection spectroscopy setup create in our laboratory. Using this setup we are able to induce and observe vibrations in solid state samples. The so called optical and acoustic phonons are created and probed by near infra red ultra short laser pulses. The change of reflection of the probe beam is measured as a function of delay from induction time to give information about frequency and decay time of phonons. The “daughter” phonons – the effect of decay of induced phonons will hopefully be observed to complete the picture of sample phonon dynamics. Setup resolution is 20 fs and decay times as long as 200 ps can be measured.
