Pseudomorphic layers of platinum or palladium and their interactions with CO
– experimental approach and calculations

Sebastian Wojtysiak, UW
Supervisor: dr hab. Andrzej Kudelski (UW)

Platinum and palladium are known as very good, however not perfect, catalysts. Moreover, both metals are very expensive and not very abundant on earth. Synthesis of materials containing a thin compact layer of Pt or Pd over another metal leads to cheaper catalysts with modified properties.
Here we report the synthesis of electrochemically stable in acidic solution materials such as Ag@Pt nanoparticles, Au@Pt nanoparticles and Ag(111)@Pt single crystal. These materials were examined by means of electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical methods (IR). The results of calculations of C-O vibrational frequencies on different sites of Pd clusters are close to experimental values and provide a methodology for similar calculations with M@Pd and M@Pt clusters.
