professional goals:

Fundamental knowledge of the properties of matter, the laws of the chemical changes of matter and of selected chemical compounds.

Course description:

Fundamental concepts: atom, molecule, atomic number, mass number, isotopes, atomic mass. The periodic law and Periodic Table. Energetic and entropic factors in chemical reactions. The heat effect of the reaction and its determination. The concept and the physical meaning of entropy. Free energy. The equilibrium state and the equilibrium constant. The Le Chatelier-Braun’s principle. Acid-base equilibria. The concept of pH. The ionic product of water. Buffer systems. Solubility product. Redox equilibria. The Nernst equation. Simple examples of galvanic and electrolytic cells. The rate of chemical reaction. Basic concepts of chemical kinetics. The wave function in quantum chemistry and its interpretation. Electronic configurations of atoms and ions. Types of interatomic bonds. An introduction to complex compounds. Coordination number and symmetry of the ligand configuration around the central ion. Unidentate and polydentate ligands. Thermodynamic and kinetic stability of complex compounds. Review of the fundamental properties of most important elements and their simple compounds.

Required background:

Elementary chemistry course on the secondary school level. Elementary knowledge of physics and mathematics (including exponential and logarithmic functions and the derivative of function).
