Organic Chemistry

Educational and
professional goals:

This lecture is mainly addressed to advanced undergraduates at the beginning of their research careers. The aim is to introduce students to some of reactions used in modern organic synthesis.

Course description:

Basic concepts in organic synthesis: designing of synthetic ways, idea of retrosynthesis, synthons. Transformation of functional groups. Protection groups in organic chemistry. Formation of carbon-carbon single bonds: alkylation and acylation of anion enolates; alkylation of relatively acidic methylene groups; alkylation of ketones, enamines and their application in organic synthesis. Heterocyclic compounds: synthesis and reactivity; nucleophilic and electrophilic substitution into heterocyclic ring. Supramolecular chemistry - background. Chemistry of macromolecules: mechanism of polymerisation. Nucleophilic substitution in aromatic compounds.
