Educational and
professional goals:

Basic knowledge of available energy sources, their storage, use and environmental implications of their use.

Course description:

Review of conventional and alternative energy sources available on Earth and the environmental implications of their use. Energy sources: solar energy (high and low temperature), photovoltaics, geothermal energy, energy related to the movement of inland and ocean waters, wind energy, and biomass usage with a focus on energy storage. Importance of electrochemical energy sources (batteries and accumulators), their use in automobile industry (electric cars) and in medicine (pace makers). History of the discovery and development of the electrochemical power sources. Types of batteries: primary batteries, accumulators, and fuel cells. Various fuels used in fuel cells. Importance of hydrogen, a 21st century main fuel source. Technology of hydrogen production, safe storage of hydrogen and the use of hydrogen in energetics. Pros and cons of the use of nuclear energy.
