Educational and
professional goals:

Student should posses basic knowledge of properties, methods of synthesis and investigations of solid state.

Course description:

Bonding in solids: ionic, covalent, metallic bonding. Crystal structures : synthesis, purification , different types of crystal structures, their description and methods of characterization. Defects and non-stoichiometry : point defects, vacancies and interstitial ions in solid solution, dislocations, defects movement- diffusion, defects and mechanical properties of solids. Phase diagrams: interpretation and application in solid state reactions (decomposition, oxidation, high pressure reaction). Thermal properties. Electrical properties: ionic conductivity, elements of band theory of solid state, electronic conductivity in metals, semiconductors , conjugated systems, contact effects, photoconductivity. Superconductivity. Magnetic and optical properties: paramagnetic, diamagnetic, ferromagnetic materials, their structure and properties. Luminescence. Surface phenomena. Preparation of thin films: electrochemically, by chemical vapour deposition, sputtering, laser ablation. New methods applied in synthesis of solid state.
