Teaching Division:

Organic Chemistry

Educational and
professional goals:

Upon completing the laboratory course students should be familiar with advanced techniques used in the synthesis of organic compounds.

Course description:

In the introductory part of the course students prepare anhydrous solvents, and then perform 3-5 step syntheses. The experiments involve the use of syringes and needles for transferring solutions and might be carried out in decreased temperatures (- 20 oC to - 80oC). Some reactions require generating unstable reagents, use of gaseous hydrogen or liquid ammonia. Chromatography and high vacuum distillation can be used for product separation.

Required background:

Organic Chemistry I.

Form of assessment:

A final course grade based on successfully completing the synthesis and passing the test.
