Teaching Division:

Physical Chemistry

Educational and
professional goals:

Practical acquaintance with experimental methods of characterization of solids, solid surfaces and physical and chemical properties of materials.

Course description:

The experiments involve spectroscopic and other physical characterization of popular materials, as well as engineering of new materials using computational methods. The laboratory course includes: investigation of graphite and mica surfaces by tunneling and atomic force microscopes (STM and AFM); fabrication of carbon nanostructures and their investigation by Scanning Electron Microscope and Raman spectra; studies of phase transitions and optical properties of liquid crystals using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), polarization microscopes and laser spectroscopy; NMR spectra of liquid crystals; studies of thermodynamic properties of polymers and polymer blends by DSC measurements, density and viscosity evaluation; IR reflectance spectra of conducting polymer films on metallic supports - influence of the polymer oxidation state on the spectrum; application of conducting polymers in electrochemical sensors; thermomagnetic analysis of solids; hydrophobic-hydrophilic characteristics of substances using contact angle measurements; physical and chemical properties of ionic liquids; theoretical modeling of optical properties of new materials; determination of spin-spin coupling constants from NMR spectra; Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.

Required background:
