Lecturer:

Prof. dr. hab. Wojciech Gadomski, dr. hab. Bożena Gadomska,
Room: R214     Phone extn.: 487     email: gado@chem.uw.edu.pl

Teaching Division:

Physics and Radiochemistry

Educational and
professional goals:

Knowledge of concepts of molecular optics and laser spectroscopy, particularly of femtosecond molecular dynamics and kinetics of chemical reaction in real time.

Course description:

Interaction of electromagnetic wave with matter: single molecule, system of molecules, solid state- classic and quantum picture. Linear and nonlinear phenomena accompanying the interaction of electromagnetic wave with matter; their role in investigation of molecules and new materials. Concept of the coherent response of the medium. Physical fundamentals and methods of coherent laser spectroscopy in condensed phase, gas phase and molecular beams. Elements of femtochemistry: intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution; dynamics of transient states; dynamics of momentary structures in molecular beams and in condensed phase; breaking and making of chemical bonds, dynamics of solvation process, reaction of charge transfer. Spectroscopy “pump-probe” in femtochemistry: transient absorption, femtosecond optical Kerr effect, stimulated Raman scattering, ultrafast selective excitation of chosen energy levels in molecules, photon echo.
