Teaching Division:

Theoretical Chemistry and Crystallography

Educational and
professional goals:

Solution of practical problems related to the methods and techniques of X-ray and neutron diffraction on crystals and powders, problems related to particular stages of the process of structural analysis. These classes are offered mainly to those students who intend to specialize in crystallography and solid state chemistry.

Course description:

The classes start with some refreshment of the most important and useful concepts of geometrical crystallography and then problems related to the whole procedure of structural analysis are covered. This includes properties and production of X-rays and neutrons, theoretical background of data collection and diffraction of X-rays and neutrons on crystals, parameters influencing intensity of the scattered X-ray beams, Fourier transformation, structure factors, phase problem, direct methods, the most important relations valid for the centro and noncentrosymmetrical structures, refinement of structures, electron density mapping, interpretation of the final results, chirality, absolute structure, multipolar refinemt of electron density and topological analysis of electron density.

Required background:

Crystallography A or B

Form of assessment:

Sum of points from colloquia and written exam.
