Teaching Division:

Theoretical Chemistry and Crystallography

Educational and
professional goals:

The main goal of this laboratory is to learn and practice typical crystallographic operations such as crystallization, the use of 4-circle CCD diffractometer and crystallographic software and to learn how to solve practical problems related to disorder of crystal structures, polymorphism, refinement, and interpretation of data.

Course description:

This laboratory is offered to those students who wish to complete master courses in our laboratory (or SRL). The exercises we propose are mainly individual projects focused on structural analysis of a series of compounds. Students starts with some literature work and then perform data collection for interesting compounds to process the data starting from data reduction up to the final structure refinement and preparation of professional report.

Second group of classes is devoted to: crystallography of proteins, advanced problems related to small molecules and experimental studies of electron density. Practical exercises are focused on phasing process - isomorphous replacement, refinement of a model obtained, verification of data; twinned structures and polimorphic structures, practical aspects of multipolar refinement and topological analysis of electron density.

Required background:

Crystallography II.

Form of assessment:

Report on an individual project.
