Educational and
professional goals:

Acquisition of knowledge about natural biologically active compounds and their influence on the development of chemotherapy, drug syntheses and rational drug design.

Course description:

The lecture topics are the following: a review on main groups of secondary metabolites with distinguished biological activity (glycosides, alkaloids, steroids, terpenes, antibiotics):the most important plant raw materials; modern methods of increasing of selected metabolites content in plant material; alkaloids with strong activity toward nervous system as lead compounds in the search for counterpain drugs; natural substances exhibiting antineoplastic, mutagenic and carcinogenic activity and their influence on advances of chemotherapy; natural anticancer drugs of plant origin; natural compounds as an inspiration in the rational drug design; actual needs for new drugs.

Lectures: Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry I.

Form of assessment:


Written test / colloquium.

Remarks:

Strongly recommended for students planning to pursue further studies in organic and biological chemistry.
