Educational and
professional goals:
Student acquire the knowledge of specific synthetic methods in organic chemistry, improve their laboratory skills and ability to use modern chemical databases for planning organic syntheses.

Course description:
Students, provided with the structure and/or name of the target compound, have to find experimental procedures to carry out the experiment. The selection of the target compound is based on the actual research conducted at the Faculty of Chemistry. Using computerized chemical databases, e.g. Beilstein, to search the literature data is strongly recomended. Proposed syntheses consist of at least three steps and allows students to learn about the relationship between chemical yield of the single stage and final yield of the synthesis. Students improve their laboratory skills working under anhydrous conditions, diminished pressure, etc. and also using column chromatography to separate the final product. For elucidation of the structure of synthesized compounds, modern spectroscopic methods are used.
