Educational and
professional goals:

Designed for students who wish to acquire knowledge in programming in Fortran as well as to learn the skills which are necessary to solve numerical problems of chemical data elaboration.

Course description:

Basic description of computer environment for chemical applications: personal computers and workstations, communication systems, operational system, academic computer network. Concept of computer programming. Basic elements of Fortran (version Fortran 77 and Fortran 90): names, types, constants, variables, arrays, arithmetic and logical expressions, do-loops, assignment, input/output commands, conditional expressions, standard functions. Structural elements: functions, subroutines, modules. Running programs in various computer systems. Elements of debugging. Libraries accessible via internet: numerical recipes. Elements of parallel programming. Short description of professional software written in Fortran and oriented on chemical and molecular modeling.

Required background:


Mathematics, physics and chemistry (1st and 2nd year Chemistry).
