professional goals:

An introduction to basic notions, phenomena, kinetics and processes in polymer chemistry.

Course description:

Conventional free radical polymerization. Radical and ionic polarizability of vinyl monomers. Conventional initiators of free radical polymerization. Properties of radicals. Elementary reactions in free radical polymerization - kinetic models of free radical polymerization and copolymerization. Alfrey-Price “Q-e” scheme. Molecular weight and molecular weight distributions. Polymerization parameters and their influence on the properties of polymers. General concept of living radical polymerization and its kinetics. Nitroxide mediated living radical polymerization (NMP). ATRP concept and control of radical polymerization by chain transfer methods. RAFT - mechanism and agents. Macromolecular engineering by controlled radical polymerization. Outlook for living radical polymerization.
