professional goals:

Introduction to basic problems related to manufacturing plastics objects of daily use.

Course description:

General approaches to polymer synthesis. Polymerizability of monomers. Description of processes transforming polymers, produced in large scale, into plastics objects of daily use, and their impact on our environment. Main topics discussed: industrial methods of polymer synthesis (PE, PP, PS, PMM, PCV); polymeric materials vs. plastics; chemical and physical factors affecting functional properties of polymeric materials; chemical and physical modification of polymers characteristics, fillers and additives for polymers; biodegradable polymers; plastics processing: compounding and forming of polymeric materials; recycling technologies for polymeric materials.

Required background:


Basic knowledge of synthesis and properties of synthetic polymers.

Form of assessment:


Written examination.
